Thanks to our members...

Thankyou. This month has been an amazing show of solidarity. We’ve raised thousands of dollars for the Canberra Kids Hospital. We’ve made life easier for sick kids. We’ve stood together and we’ve demanded safer workplaces.

Last week, I was joined by ACT Chief Minister Andrew Barr and MLA’s Susan Orr, Bec Cody and Michael Petterson to launch the Kids Hospital Appeal. Looking after workers doesn’t stop at the site gate, and that’s why we’re so determined to raise these vital funds for sick kids across the ACT. If you missed the news, this year we’ve worked with the Tradies Club to guarantee at least $10,000 in donations.

We say that at the CFMEU, your family is our family. This is how we show it.

Unfortunately this month also saw the shocking news that the ACT is now the least safe place in Australia to work. A Safe Work Australia report released in March revealed that while there were fewer workplace injuries across Australia, the risk in the ACT has actually increased. In last month’s newsletter I spoke about the bastard builders and dodgy developers who were putting our members at risk. Kay Catanzariti’s letter illustrated just how difficult it is to get justice when a worker is killed on the job. It’s not good enough, and now the stats have proved it.

You have my word, the CFMEU will never take a backward step when it comes to your safety. This is only the beginning of our campaign to protect workers.

In solidarity,

Zach Smith
